The Marina beach located in Chennai is spread across an area of thirteen kms. The great marina beach is known to be the second largest beach in the world. After its naming and reincarnation in 1880; it is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is flocked by number of tourists every year.

Marina Beach: Unremitting Gorgeousness

It starts from Harbour and ends at Santhome Cathedral. In the beginning of 1880 the beach got a facelift by the governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff.

Many great memorials like MG R Samadhi and Anna Samadhi are located on the sea shore. This particular section is popularly called as Anna Square.

In short Marina beach is a perfect blend of crystal clear sea, great surf and golden colored sand. The beach is one of the longest beaches in Asia.

People get a heavenly feeling watching the sunset and sunrise. Despite of the fact that swimming is a bit dangerous in this particular beach because of the strong undercurrent, people still visit this place for the purpose of swimming.

Evenings are equally beautiful because of various means of entertainment and with the presence of food stalls.

Prime Attractions

It has acquired a South Indian aura with vendors hawking wares ranging from shell and glass baubles to kites and fruit juices. The Marina, however, is large enough to accommodate all visitors as well as the hawkers and is often the venue for important state functions. Some of the most beautiful buildings located on the beach drive are the University of Madras, Senate-House, Chepauk Palace, Presidency College, P.W.D office and Ice House. At the other end of the beach is the lighthouse. In between, sentinels on the promenade, are several statues of Tamil scholars and two splendid bits of sculpture- the Victory of Labour and the Mahatma Gandhi.

Anna and MGR samadhis

Anna Square and MGR Memorial situated along side the beach road are flocked by people paying their respects at the samadhi of Late Chief Ministers of Tamilnadu Dr. C.N. Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran.

Aquarium

Close to the Marina beach is the aquarium, with some of the most exotic collection of tropical sea fishes and fresh water fishes.
