Punalu'u Beach is one of the greatest wonders created by Mother Nature. The unique black sand and swaying coconut trees in southern part of the island create the magic. You have the option to take the sun bathe or enjoy a cool picnic on the beach.
The black color of the sand is because of the molten lava from two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa that spilled inside the water.
After cooling, the lava looked just like sand. Considering the rarity of this black sand, visitors are advised not to take it away from the beach.
